A brief history of the Province of West Kent

Last updated:  30 December 2006

There have been Freemasons' Lodges in the County of Kent since 1770 and, until 1973, the masonic Province of Kent extended from the borders of South East London right down to the Kent coast.  This is, indeed, a very large area.

With the coming of peace, following World War II, there was an upsurge of new Masonic lodges formed throughout the county, so much so, that by the 1970s, it was becoming difficult for the then Provincial Grand Master, Lord Cornwallis, and his team to administer and visit all the lodges in Kent.

In 1973, therefore, the decision was made by the United Grand Lodge of England that a new Province be formed to be called the Masonic Province of West Kent.
